Stress and COVID-19 – Tips

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the new coronavirus, (COVID-19) a pandemic. This pandemic is causing stress and anxiety around the world. Of paramount priority is not to let the media amplify the fear, rather, get knowledgeable, be careful, and take steps in managing stress and anxiety over coronavirus.

Every day we hear news of actions that are being taken to control the spread of COVID-19. Projections of more people falling ill can cause fear and anxiety.

While it is important to stay informed, during a public health crisis keeping the news playing on the television or radio steadily in your home can cause more fear than is necessary. Also pay attention if you have children listening.

How can we manage?

We all react differently to uncertain situations. If you are striving to manage fear there are steps you can take to minimize stress and anxiety. Here are a few tips that can help:

Connect with others

We are social people. Many of us are now faced with self-isolation or we understand we should avoid going out as much as possible.

With today’s technology, we can speak face to face with friends and loved ones via Skype or video chat with WhatsApp or Facebook. This is a good time to stay connected. This will benefit you and those you are connecting with. Other people will also benefit when you reach out to them.

Be Positive

If you are quarantined at home or if you are staying home to minimize risk, focus on the benefits that can come with this situation. This is a good time to enjoy more time dedicated to leisure activities such as reading a good book, learning to meditate, or watching movies online.

Attitude is everything, focus on the pleasurable activities that come with this unusual situation.

Keep perspective

While the response to this virus is extreme, most people who get it will experience mild symptoms only or recover. This is not to minimize the seriousness of the risk to those who are more vulnerable. It is important to stay healthy so we do not spread the disease, however, if we understand the risk of severe illness is low, we can stay calm.

Focus on prevention, wash your hands, disinfect surfaces, do not touch your face and stay informed of how to minimize the risk of (COVID-19).

If you feel anxious, practice long slow deep breaths. You can read about the technique here.
